Ledger Nano S Plus hardware wallet with branded protective coverBest overall

Ledger Nano S Plus

The default answer to "which wallet should I buy?" A certified EAL6+ secure element holds your keys, the buttons physically confirm every transaction, and the Ledger ecosystem supports more coins than any competitor. No Bluetooth, no battery — that's the point: nothing wireless to attack, nothing to drain.

Trezor Safe 5 touchscreen hardware wallet connected to a laptopBest touchscreen

Trezor Safe 5

A gorgeous haptic touchscreen over an EAL6+ Optiga secure element, from the most transparent firmware team in the industry — Trezor's code has been public since 2014. The Gorilla-glass display and satisfying click feedback make transaction verification feel deliberate rather than routine, which matters more than it sounds.

COLDCARD Mk4 and COLDCARD Q bitcoin wallets held in handsBest for Bitcoin

COLDCARD Q

Paranoid engineering, in the best sense. The Q is fully air-gapped — data moves by QR code, SD card or NFC, never USB. Dual secure elements, a duress PIN, and a keyboard so you can type passphrases without a computer. It's Bitcoin-only, which is exactly why it's so hard to get wrong. The smaller Mk4 remains available for less.

BitBox02 hardware wallet made in SwitzerlandMost transparent setup

BitBox02

A Swiss wallet with a refreshingly calm approach: the companion app verifies the device's genuine firmware on first plug-in, and full-disk micro-SD backups make recovery a two-minute job. Open source end to end, with a Bitcoin-only edition that strips everything else away. The little OLED and two touch sliders keep the hardware simple to audit.

Keystone 3 Pro hardware wallet with QR code air-gap interfaceBest air-gapped value

Keystone 3 Pro

The best argument that air-gapped security doesn't have to cost $350. A 4-inch touchscreen, fingerprint unlock, three-slot tamper-proof secure elements, and a signing flow that runs entirely through QR codes — the camera is the only data channel. Firmware is open source with reproducible builds, and multisig with PSBT is first-class.

NGRAVE Zero hardware wallet with biometric sensorHighest certification

NGRAVE Zero

The only hardware wallet on the market certified EAL7 — the highest security evaluation level that exists, and two grades above the EAL5/6 chips in most competitors. It never connects to anything: transactions arrive by camera, keys stay behind biometric and PIN gates, and the "Graphene" steel backup option means your seed survives a house fire.

Ledger Nano X hardware walletBest for mobile

Ledger Nano X

The Nano S Plus with a battery and Bluetooth, for people who genuinely manage crypto from their phone. The secure element still signs everything; Bluetooth only carries encrypted instructions, and a physical button press confirms every transaction. If you never touch your holdings from mobile, save the $70 and buy the S Plus.

Trezor Safe 3 hardware walletBest budget

Trezor Safe 3

The cheapest wallet we'd actually recommend without asterisks. An EAL6+ secure element protects the seed — something the older Model One couldn't offer — while keeping Trezor's fully open firmware and dead-simple backup flow. The two-button interface is slow for big transactions, but for long-term holding that's a feature, not a bug.

ELLIPAL Titan 2.0 air-gapped hardware walletMost rugged

ELLIPAL Titan 2.0

A fully air-gapped wallet in an anti-tamper metal body: open the case and it wipes its keys. There are no ports at all — updates and transactions move exclusively by QR code, which makes entire classes of attack physically impossible. The 4-inch display is bright, the build feels industrial, and the price undercuts most air-gapped rivals.

SafePal S1 hardware walletCheapest air gap

SafePal S1

Proof that air-gapped signing can cost less than a nice dinner. The S1 has no Bluetooth, no USB data and no network — everything moves by QR — and an EAL5+ secure element holds the keys. The plastic build and 1.3" screen feel budget-tier, but the security architecture is the real thing. Our pick for a first cold wallet or a stash you check twice a year.

Before you click buy

Three rules that keep you out of the blacklist.

Official stores only

Every buy button on this page goes to the manufacturer's own store. Amazon resellers, "discount" sites and marketplace listings are where counterfeit and tampered wallets come from. Many of them end up on our blacklist.

Inspect the seal

A tampered package isn't always obvious. Check that anti-tamper seals are intact, the firmware-verification step passes on first setup, and the device asks you to generate a new seed — never accepts one you didn't create on it.

Test the recovery

Before sending real money, wipe the device and restore from your written backup. Ten minutes of inconvenience now is the difference between an inconvenience and a loss. Our seed phrase guide covers the full routine.
